The Association for Visual Arts — AVA Gallery — is a non-profit, membership-based organisation on Church Street and one of the oldest independent art spaces in Cape Town, running open-call exhibitions for over fifty years.
The open-call model is what makes it matter: an artist with no gallery and no dealer can be selected on the work alone, which is not true of most of the addresses on the same street. It is a membership organisation rather than a commercial gallery, funded to advance South African contemporary art rather than to sell it. AVA opens for First Thursdays, the CBD's late-opening evening on the first Thursday of every month.
