St George's Cathedral

St George's Cathedral on Wale Street is the Anglican mother church of Southern Africa and, more consequentially, the building Desmond Tutu made the headquarters of a moral argument — the 'People's Cathedral' of the anti-apartheid struggle, from which the 1989 march on the city began. The architecture rewards the visit on its own terms, layered across more than a century of building and rebuilding, and the crypt and labyrinth are open to the public. On First Thursdays the cathedral opens in the evening with a programme of performances, which is the best way to hear the building. It stands at the top of Wale Street beside the Company's Garden.
